Toying Around Reviews - DC Multiverse '89 Batman
DC Multiverse ‘89 Batman
Today we will be taking a look at the DC Multiverse ‘89 Batman from Mattel.
This Batman figure is meant to honor the classic 1989 Batman figure that was released back in 1989 by ToyBiz.
Packaging:
Before we open this up, let's take a look at the packaging.
Batman comes in the standard blue and black packaging that we see with all the Multiverse figures. The figure is displayed in the middle with his accessories displayed for you to see The backing behind the figure is to represent the classic ToyBiz 1989 Batman packaging. To the left of that, you have a picture of Batman. On the bottom of the box, we have the DC logo along with the Multiverse logo.
The left side of the box shows the same Batman image that we see on the front of the box.
Turning the box to the back we have a picture of the 3 figures in this wave, Batman, Joker and Poison Ivy, along with a small bio: The Caped Crusader defends Gotham City against the world’s most dangerous criminal masterminds.
Moving the box around once more to the right side, we have that same Batman picture again.
Outside of the Box:
Let's open the box and take a closer look at the figure.
Taking Batman outside the box we can see that overall there isn’t much to him, black plastic, a little bit of yellow paint and some flesh color paint.
Accessories:
Let's see what kind of accessories the figure comes with.
Batman comes with his bat-a-rang and his grapple gun. The end of the bat-a-rang can be put into the end of the gun.
Articulation:
How can we pose the figure? Let's find out!
Batman's articulation includes the following:
Hinged Ball Jointed Head - allows you to swivel the head 360-degrees and tilt the head back and forth.
Ball Hinged Shoulders - gives the arm 360-degree rotation and also the ability to raise and lower the arm (hindered big time by the hard plastic cape on the shoulders).
Upper Bicep Swivel - This cut lets you turn the whole arm below the cut 360-degrees.
Single Jointed Elbows - this allows you to bend the arm about 90 degrees.
Swivel Hinge Wrists - allows you to turn his wrists in a full 360-degree circle while also bending them up and down.
Ab Crunch - this cut lets you be able to bend the figure front and back at the Abs.
Waist Swivel - this lets you be able to turn the figure around 360 degrees at the waist.
Ball Jointed Legs - with this it allows the legs to move out to the side along with some front and back motion.
Upper Thigh Swivel - the leg can rotate around a full 360 degrees.
Double Jointed Knees - joint allows you to bend the leg itself back to the butt of the figure.
Hinged Ankles with rockers - The ankle hinge allows you to bend the foot front and back. The rockers allow you to rock the ankles towards the outside and inside of the legs of the figure.
Size Comparison:
How does the size of this figure compare to others?
Batman stands right around 6.5 inches tall.
Here is Batman standing next to the SuperFriends/Adam West Batman and the BvS Batman.
Rating:
What are Baby Huey's scores for the figure?
Paint Job 1/5
Ok, so the only real paint on the figure is the logo on the chest, the belt, and the face, and the face is where the issue is. They used way too much flesh color and it looks caked on. It draws away from the figure itself.
Figure Sculpt / Posing 3/5
The overall body of the figure itself isn’t bad, it’s just not the right body for a batman figure, especially one the should be based on the ‘89 movie. The body is just too small.
Articulation wise it’s all there on the figure, so that does help it in the scoring.
Durability 5/5
For once I have a Mattel DC figure that I don’t feel like it’s going to break when I move him around. The plastic and the joints are solid on this figure. Sadly, it took Mattel losing the license for them to finally start making decent figures.
Overall Score 3/5
Retail Cost: $19.99
I picked up mine at my local Target, however, the figure is not on the website for order.
