Fireside First Look: CW's Batwoman

CW has put the Batsignal in the sky a little early this season. The producers at WB have unveiled their first look at Ruby Rose’s Batwoman. Rose is set to debut as Batwoman on this seasons Arrow-Verse crossover that will span across Arrow, Flash, and Supergirl.

Batwoman has a long history in the comics and her original incarnation debuted in Detective Comics #233. Katherine Kane, better known as Kathy, was introduced in order to combat the allegations of Batman’s homosexuality. In 1964 the character entered a long hiatus until the 2006 revamp dubbed the “New 52” This version of Katherine Kane went by Kate Kane and began operating in Gotham after the Infinite Crisis storyline. Unlike the original character that was put there to confirm Batman’s sexuality this Batwoman was created as a beacon for the LGBT community. Kate was being written now as a member of the LGBT community and of Jewish decent.

Batwoman has appeared mostly independently of Batman but has gained quite a following over the past few years. Batwoman has taken the lead role in her own Batwoman series as well as several lead stints in Detective Comics. Most recently Kate Kane appeared in the 2016 DC Animated feature Batman: Bad Blood. Ruby Rose will be the first to portray a live action version of the character and the CW has received praise for seeking out an actress that is part of the LGBT community. Show runners at CW are already looking to develop a Batwoman spinoff before her debut later this year.

In our first look we see Batwoman in all of her glory and a well done costume. It is relatively comic accurate minus the bright red gauntlets and inside of the cape. Pulling the look together is Rose sporting the blood red hair flowing from the mask as well as her “Ruby” red lips. Here’s hoping that the character is written well and finally gives the small screen a member of the Bat Family to be proud of.
